Where You Will Work
Because the need for commercial art is so broad, towns and cities of all sizes offer some sort of opportunity for graphic artists, depending on the nature of their work. To check the demand for graphic artists in your community, turn to the Yellow Pages of the telephone directory. You could also consult the art teachers at your local high school.
The Professionals Speak
First we'll hear from a careerist who entered the field by working for commercial arts companies, but has now owned and operated a graphic design/video production business for a number of years. This experience includes working with other graphic designers, as well as on freelance projects.
I Own My Own Studio
"I wanted to create fine arts - painting, sculpture, and prints. When I got into school I realized that there was commercial art, used for advertising, exhibits and displays, and packaging design, so I pursued a career in designing graphics and layout.
My first job, working as an exhibit designer, was very interesting, but, I had to be part of a team. I didn't get to design and work on certain aspects of the project. I enjoyed the creative aspects rather than just creating layouts and models.
Artists can very temperamental. When two or more artists work together, everyone has to be very diplomatic so that communication doesn't break down between co-workers.
It is important to compare the positive points of working for a corporation and of being in business for oneself.
Working for a company, you have health benefits and you don't have the concerns of finding your own clients. Also, you don't have to worry about keeping up with the financial book work and paperwork.
Working for yourself allows you to work to your maximum potential. You can set your own hours, which are often 10 to 15 hours a day, but you control your own work, your own design.
I was already out of school and had established my design studio when computers began to play a major role in design, but now I perform most tasks with a computer system.
When computers first entered the graphics industry illustrators, designers and layout artists were being left out in the cold, without work. Corporations thought they could fill that position with a computer and unskilled labor. WRONG. After years of struggling they have come to the realization that they need skilled graphic artists who are computer literate.
Software that allows us to create complex images has helped the industry and made it easier and less expensive to produce very involved images. Images such as clip art and quality photographs available on CDs have provided a vast library of resources, not to mention the information available on the World Wide Web."
Success Without Leaving Home
Our next careerist proves that even a small town graphic design business can be a success, so long as the owner knows how to deal with clients. The secret? Keep clients happy with your work, to build repeat business.
"You have people coming to you from a variety of businesses
